“They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.” Luke 9:31 HCSB

What could Moses and Elijah have to tell Jesus about His death? Elijah never died and Moses never suffered in his death. One thing that would be common for all three men that Jesus would be accomplished in His death is the freeing of people. Moses freed the Israelites out of Egypt by the many plagues that were performed by God (Exodus 7-11). Elijah freed the people from the religion of Baal worship right after the miracle of fire from heaven during the mount Carmel experience (1Kings 18). And Jesus was getting ready to set all people free from the bondage of sin. Moses and Elijah would be able to describe to Jesus what this feels like.

Another thing that they would have in common is rejection. Moes was rejected by everyone after he killed the Egyptian that was tormenting an Israelite (Exodus 2:11-15). Elijah would be able to talk about the rejection he felt being “the only prophet left in all Israel (1 Kings 19:9-10)”. Jesus had to learn these things to be able to relate to us. He knows how to comfort us when we feel rejection. He had to know what it would feel like to redeem people unto Himself.

“Though He was God’s Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered. After He was perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him,”
Hebrews 5:8-9 HCSB

“Therefore, He had to be like His brothers in every way, so that He could become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For since He Himself was tested and has suffered, He is able to help those who are tested.”
Hebrews 2:17-18 HCSB

Jesus did not just show up knowing it all He learned and grew in wisdom in front of God and man. The same is true throughout this life. We don’t get saved and know all we need to know to love and serve God. We must learn how to do it. We will not pass all of our tests the first time but we will learn through it all. Jesus understands all this and will welcome us back every time. He is that faithful teammate that is there to help us back up after we get knocked down.
