Joshua 1:6 (CSB) "Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance.

This is the first time of three God has told Joshua to be strong and courageous. Why does Joshua need to be strong and courageous? Moses is dead and Joshua now has to lead the next generation in the promise land. Joshua has seen Moses lead the people through the wilderness. Moses was his example and now Joshua has to lean on God as his example. Joshua has also seen Moses rely on God. No doubt he saw Moses part the Red Sea. He was half way up  with Moses on the mountain while God spoke to Moses. He was one of the faithful spy's who Moses had sent out. He was there to see Moses and the Israelites build the tabernacle. Joshua has seen it all in the wilderness. But now He is facing a new season, the promise land. The land of Giants, milk and honey. All of Gods blessings await them. But they have all the native people standing in their way. They will have to fight to receive it. They will have to trust God to fight with them to receive it. They will have to trust God and not fight against God to receive it. God is about to do what He does best, surprise His people with how He is going to do it.

Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
