Philippians 4:2 (CSB) I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord.
These two women had helped Paul while he was in Philippi, now they are not getting along. Paul separately urges them to rectify their relationship. Euodia means a good journey. She was not living up to her name. She had let a small disagreement complicate her walk with Christ and her life. Syntyche means fortunate. She had the blessings of God on her life and due to this agreement she was not receiving all the blessings from God. We each have about three names. We have the name our parents gave us at birth. Each one of us is called Christian, son or daughter, friend if we have accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord. We also have a new name only which we will know when we overcome the Evil One (Revelation 2:7). Are we living up to our name as Christian, Son or Daughter, Friend? Christian is Christ one, are we being the best ambassador, high commissioner, for Jesus? Are we displaying Christ in our life? How about son or daughter of God? The kids of high ranking officials, like king or president, are scrutinized sharply and when they are out enjoying the pleasures of the world are bringing reproach to the king. We as sons or daughters represent God and Jesus. Those who watch our lives are either worshiping God or repulsed by God by our actions. How about our name of Friend. Jesus was known by the people of His day as a friend to tax collectors and sinners. So as Jesus calls us friend do we welcome sinners into our lives so that way we can tell them about Jesus or do we shut them out. We are not to befriend the activities of the world and participate on them but we are to see the world as potential Christians, brothers or sisters, friend.
I imagine these two women separately coming to Paul with arguments against the other. And Paul tells each one separately to forgive the other and to agree in The Lord. But then Paul leaves the outcome to these to women. Just has we take complaints to God about a brother or sister in Christ. And then Jesus tells us to reconcile with them and leaves the outcome to us.
Matthew 6:14-15 (NET) 14 "For if you forgive others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you your sins.
Matthew 5:23-24 (NET) 23 So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.
