1 John 1:9 (CSB) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The key really is repentance. The difference between our once sins and habitual sins is our repentance. First we will know that sin is sin. God will began to work on the areas of our life. By His Holy Spirit He will bring conviction into our lives that He wants to clean up (Job 36:10). Second we must confess that it is sin to God. Third we must repent and decide to give it up. Sometimes it is a once and done event. Other times it may take years of daily repenting. Either way God will forgive if we confess and repent. God loves us so much He is willing to have fellowship with us, but He cannot and will not be in the presence of sin. He is more than willing to forgive our sins to maintain fellowship with us.

Genesis 3:8-13 (CSB) 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 So the LORD God called out to the man and said to him, "Where are you? " 10 And he said, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid." 11 Then he asked, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? " 12 The man replied, "The woman you gave to be with me -- she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate." 13 So the LORD God asked the woman, "What is this you have done? " And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

Matthew 6:9-13 (CSB) 9 "Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy. 10 "Your kingdom come. Your will be done 11 "on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. 12 "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 "And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

If we confess our sins he will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. It is not by some special way that we are righteous in of our selves, but the blood of Jesus washes our sin record clean. We become the holy and blameless church for Christ by Christ (Ephesians 5:26-27). Because our sin record has been washed clean there is no condemnation (Romans 8:1). If we have no condemnation then our joy is complete (1 John 1:4).
