Matthew 4:19 (CSB) "Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fish for people."

Matthew 4:19 (NLT) Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!"

Jesus was the example for Peter and Andrew to follow. They were being called Jesus to follow him. Andrew had been told by John the Baptist to follow Jesus. In the days of Jesus in order to follow a rabbi (teacher) you had to show yourself studied up and knowledgeable of the bible, but here comes Jesus and He called Peter and Andrew who had been to school and was not accepted by another rabbi. The disciples of a rabbi would follow so close to the rabbi that the dust the rabbi would kick up when walking would get on their cloths and sandals. What a privilege for these two men to go from ordinary to a disciple of a rabbi. This is our call too. Jesus is calling us to follow Him and He will show us how to do what He did and even more.

Every time Jesus interacted with people he was teaching his disciples how to fish for people. With the women and the well in Samaria He used water (John 4:6-14). With the Canaanite women He used food (Matthew 15:22-28). With Peter and Andrew He used fishing. With Nicodemus he used birth. Jesus did not explain the deep mysteries of God with deep words and thoughts. He used stuff the listener would understand; food, water, birth, soil, seed, etc. That is what we are to use to reach our world.

1 Corinthians 1:27-28 (CSB) 27 Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. 28 God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world -- what is viewed as nothing -- to bring to nothing what is viewed as something,
