Isaiah 53:3 (CSB) 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn't value him.
Jesus was someone who was despised but yet drew a crowd and a following. The spiritual leaders despised Him. The average Joseph felt his love. The hungry was feed. The broken was healed. The rejected was welcomed. Women felt welcome. Men felt like a friend.
Matthew 11:4-6 (CSB) 4 Jesus replied to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: 5 "The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news, 6 "and blessed is the one who isn't offended by me."
Luke 23:8-12 (CSB) 8 Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him. 9 So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate. 12 That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.
Mark 11:18 (CSB)
The chief priests and the scribes heard it and started looking for a way to kill him. For they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was astonished by his teaching.
Jesus challenged to spiritual status quo, which made the spiritual leaders upset. He challenged leaders when they did not follow the rules set up by God, but held up any law that was not in conflict with the bible. Only a few people followed him because he was the real messiah. At one point He was left by everyone and the 12 disciples might have been the only ones to follow Him (John 6:68-69). After His resurrection he appeared to 500 but by the time The Holy Spirit descended on them in the upper room there was 120 left waiting. In these last days many will be falling away. The elect will be deceived. Two will be walking along the road and one will get side tracked and stop following Jesus (Matthew 24, Luke 17:22-37)
2 Peter 2:9 (CSB)
9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,
