Romans 3:21 (CSB) But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets.
The Law could not save anyone. The law could only cover the sins of people for a year. Then new blood had to be shed to cover the sins again for a year. But now God has provided a sacrifice that does not cover our sins but that actually cleanses us from our sins once for all (1 Peter 3:18).
The law however does do two things. First it shows us what is sin. Romans 7:7 (CSB) What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.
Second it provided a glimpse of what Jesus was to be for us. John 5:46,47 (CSB) 46 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. 47 "But if you don't believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words? "
The prophets give us a glimpse of who Jesus is. Acts 10:43 (CSB) 43 "All the prophets testify about him that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins."
