Romans 3:25 (CSB) God presented him (Jesus) as an atoning sacrifice in his blood, received through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God passed over the sins previously committed.

What was the atoning sacrifices before Jesus?

Was it the Passover lamb?
Exodus 12:5,13 (CSB) "You must have an unblemished animal, a year-old male; you may take it from either the sheep or the goats.13 "The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Or was it the sin offering?
Leviticus 4:14 (CSB) "then the assembly must present a young bull as a sin offering. They are to bring it before the tent of meeting when the sin they have committed in regard to the command becomes known.

Or was it the burnt offering?
Leviticus 1:3-4 (CSB) 3 "If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to bring an unblemished male. He will bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting so that he may be accepted by the LORD. 4 "He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering so it can be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

All three of these seems it fit the bill of the atoning sacrifice. The Passover lamb was given so that the people my be passed over by the angel who was to kill the first born in Egypt and was given as food for them to leave Egypt latter. The sin offering was a mandatory sacrifice for sins made known to the person who had sinned, wether they were the priest, the whole nation, the leader, or the average Joseph. It was used to cover the sins committed. The burnt offering was voluntary and after they had laid their hands on the bull the priest would burn up the sacrifice all night. Ultimately Jesus replaced all the sacrifices. Now we are to offer our lives as the sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1-2). God has passed over our sins previously committed. He has forgiven our sins when we confess them. He has forgiven us and accepted us into fellowship with Him.
