Salvation is not by works, but God has good works for us to do. When we are faced with a good work to do, we have a choice, do we obey or do we rebel? We are God’s creation so we aught to obey. But the devil tries to convince us that we should not do the good works but rather we aught to choose something that fulfills our flesh. 

“For everything that belongs to the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle — is not from the Father, but is from the world.”

God has certain deeds that we will accomplish. But there are other deeds that if we don’t do it, He will have someone else do. And if they are obedient they will receive the reward. Then there are also good deeds that God expects all people to do. Things like the 10 commandments and the 5 commissions.
