““Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: “The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Originator of God’s creation says:” Revelation 3:14 HCSB

John is writing to the minister of the church that is in a wealthy town of Laodicea. He first reminds them who they are to be a church for. He is The Amen. Not just the closing words of a prayer but He is the one who carries out the prayer. He is not just a prophet, but He is the faithful and true witness. He is not a god but He is the one who created the whole universe with His words. Did the church in Laodicea forget who Jesus was? Did they forget Jesus in their church service. Did they forget him in their lives?

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.”

Revelation 3:15-16

I think they did! The Church of Jesus in Laodicea was neither Hot nor Cold. They said they were Christians But they did not operate in the Power of Jesus. They did not stand up against the social norms of their era.  They did not see the blind receive their sight. They did not not see the lame walk.  They did not see the deaf hear. They did not see the dead raise. But then on the same coin they were not cold. They did not completely turn away form God. They honored Him with their lips but their heart was not in it any more.

“These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.””

Matthew 15:8-9 HCSB

“The Lord said: Because these people approach Me with their mouths to honor Me with lip-service — yet their hearts are far from Me, and their worship consists of man-made rules learned by rote — therefore I will again confound these people with wonder after wonder. The wisdom of their wise men will vanish, and the understanding of the perceptive will be hidden.”

Isaiah 29:13-14 HCSB

Let us not become desensitized by this world! Because the church in Laodicea was neither on fire for God nor had they turned their back on God, God could not do anything with them. Since they were neither hot not cold God was going to dismantle His church and this church would stand in ruin just like the old temple is Jerusalem.

“Though this temple is now exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will mock. They will say: Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple? Then they will say: Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They clung to other gods and worshiped and served them. Because of this, the Lord brought all this ruin on them.”

1 Kings 9:8-9 HCSB

God wants a people who is sold out for Him. He wants people who are completely His. He is a jealous God who wants to have fellowship with a fallen people. He wants to use you and me to accomplish His will.

“For this is what the Lord says: “When 70 years for Babylon are complete, I will attend to you and will confirm My promise concerning you to restore you to this place. For I know the plans I have for you” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. You will call to Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and places where I banished you” — this is the Lord’s declaration. “I will restore you to the place I deported you from.””

Wise people still seek The Lord. Not just as Christmas or Easter, but all the time!
