“For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself.” John 5:26 HCSB

“Life” in this verse is the Greek word Zoe. It is the God given, God centered life. It is Eternal life. Yes God’s life is centered on God. This does not make God self centered as we see it, because He is the center of everything. He does not use this self centerness to make people worship Him. He uses it to help people want to worship Him. And Jesus has this same Zoe life. This takes us back to the the first assurance in verse 19 that Jesus and God are together as one. 

Other words in the Greek that are translated as life in English are bios and psuche. Bios is the physical life we can see. Psuche is the mental life. Think Body (bios), soul (psuche) and spirit (Zoe). The Body wants to resist against God. The soul longs for God to be back in the body. The Spirit is either God’s spirit or a spirit contrary to God. 

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”
