“What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given.” 1 Corinthians 3:5

Who was Apollos?

“A Jew named Apollos, a native Alexandrian, an eloquent man who was powerful in the use of the Scriptures, arrived in Ephesus. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught the things about Jesus accurately, although he knew only John’s baptism. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. After Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained the way of God to him more accurately.”

He was one of many people who believed in Jesus through John’s Baptism, but did not see Jesus or experience His ministry and baptism. He was taken under the wings of Aquila and Pricsilla to be trained (discipled). He then being fully trained by the ordinary people of Aquila and Priscilla He began His own ministry in Achaia (verse 27).  It sounds like He followed behind Paul to better train other christians.

“When he wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples urging them to welcome him. After he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace.”

He was moving, teaching, helping those Christians according to His calling and gifts.

Discipleship, in the life a single person, does not happen in one day and does not happen by just one person. it is a lengthily process. In Apollos’ life He as given the seed of the Gospel by John. He then began to learn from His Jewish roots who the Messiah would be from the Bible He had. He then learned more about Jesus and the Holy Sprit from Aquila and Priscilla who was trained by Paul. Paul learned from God,Barnabas, and Ananias.

“I did not go up to Jerusalem to those who had become apostles before me; instead I went to Arabia and came back to Damascus. Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know Cephas, and I stayed with him 15 days.”

Galatians 1:17-18 HCSB

“Barnabas, however, took him and brought him to the apostles and explained to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that He had talked to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus.”

Acts 9:27 HCSB

“So Ananias left and entered the house. Then he placed his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road you were traveling, has sent me so that you can regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.””

Who has been instrumental in your life to disciple you? Your pastor, a Sunday School teacher, a mentor, a blog! All these things are people who are helping you to grow in your discipline of the Christian Life. Who are you passing on to the things that were passed down to you? If discipleship stops with you, eventually Christianity will stop being preached and people who should have heard the Gospel through you will hear other gods to follow and they will miss Jesus. We each have a role to play in the larger role of the Church of Jesus. If each one of us is a brick in the church then in order for the church to grow taller we must have other bricks laid on top of us. The church will not crumble or stand with or with out us, but our section of the wall will be weaker or stronger depending on the integrity of us and the other “bricks” we bring to The Church.

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

A knife does not get sharped by cutting it along the cutting board or by getting thrown into the knife drawer with the other knives. It is sharpened when it is ran against a harden round steel rod. Our discipleship cannot happen by working in the world or by sitting in the church. It does happen by getting along side a few other people who are well rounded in the christian life.
