“A people rise up like a lioness; They rouse themselves like a lion. They will not lie down until they devour the prey and drink the blood of the slain.” Numbers 23:24 HCSB

“He crouches, he lies down like a lion or a lioness — who dares to rouse him? Those who bless you will be blessed, and those who curse you will be cursed.”

The same illustration was proclaimed to Judah by his father Israel just 400 years earlier.

“Judah is a young lion — my son, you return from the kill. He crouches; he lies down like a lion or a lioness — who dares to rouse him?”

Genesis 49:9 HCSB

The people of Israel was excited to be in possession of their own land. They were ready to stand and strike like a lion. In-fact they were just about to claim the land they were standing on even though it is not the promised land. the half tribe of Menassiah, Gad and Ruben would settle for this land and not walk into all the promises of God in the Promise Land. They were too eager. God promised them land beyond the Jordan, but they wanted to stay here because the land was good for their herds of sheep and oxen.

“The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a good one for livestock. So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community and said: “The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, which the Lord struck down before the community of Israel, is good land for livestock, and your servants own livestock.” They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don’t make us cross the Jordan.” But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?”

Where do we settle in our lives? God has a perfect will for us, but he will allow us to settle in an acceptable will. The Promise Land was the perfect will for the two and a half tribes, but God allowed then to settle for their land not across the Jordan into their acceptable will of God. What possessions do we hold onto that keep us out of the perfect will of God? Just as they let their sheep and cows keep them from crossing the Jordan into their promised land. Don’t be too eager to accept the acceptable will of God. Seek Him for your perfect will of God.

“Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
