“But Balaam answered him, “Didn’t I tell you: Whatever the Lord says, I must do? ”” Numbers 23:26 HCSB

“Balaam answered Balak, “Didn’t I previously tell the messengers you sent me: If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go against the Lord’s command, to do anything good or bad of my own will? I will say whatever the Lord says.”

Balaam had a specific mission from God. That mission was to bless the nation of Israel. But no matter the mission he was to speak, act, and do whatever the Lord told him to do.

We have a specific mission from God. We are to do everything the Lord tells us to do. We all know people who seem to be a little weird when it comes to following God. They will go out of their way to do something that God has told them to do. Or maybe we are those people. But If God told them to do it then they are obeying God. The hard part about following God’s voice is we have to recognize it.

Samuel did not recognize it until his teacher and mentor Eli pointed it out to him.

“Once again, for the third time, the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy. He told Samuel, “Go and lie down. If He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came, stood there, and called as before, “Samuel, Samuel! ” Samuel responded, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.””

Moses was drawn away from His flock to a burning bush so that God may speak to him.

“After 40 years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight. As he was approaching to look at it, the voice of the Lord came: I am the God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. So Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look.”

Jesus spent time daily listening to God.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there.”

We are to know the voice of Jesus.

“The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. The doorkeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t recognize the voice of strangers.”

But I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.

My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.”

We have to spend time with the Shepherd to follow His voice.

““Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?”

Luke 6:46 HCSB

““Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord! ’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name? ’ Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’”

The christian life is a life of action and work. Actions and works not for salvation, but for obedience! God has a mission for us to do. We need to listen to God and do what He tells us to do.
