“I have indeed received a command to bless; since He has blessed, I cannot change it.” Numbers 23:20 HCSB

Balaam could not curse the Israelites as Balak wanted because God was blessing them. God has the final say in the matter of blesses and curses. God told Abraham that if anyone would bless Abraham He would bless them and if anyone tires to curse Abraham God would curse them instead.

“I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Genesis 12:3 HCSB

God gave the choice to follow the commands of God and be blessed or to not follow and be cursed to the Israelites through Moses.

““Look, today I set before you a blessing and a curse: there will be a blessing, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God I am giving you today, and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the Lord your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known.”

God gave the rules to follow to be blessed or not to follow and be cursed to Solomon.

“As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and in what is right, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances, I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel. If you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep My commands — My statutes that I have set before you — and if you go and serve other gods and worship them, I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them, and I will reject the temple I have sanctified for My name. Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples. Though this temple is now exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will mock. They will say: Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple? Then they will say: Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They clung to other gods and worshiped and served them. Because of this, the Lord brought all this ruin on them.”

And then he repeated these words to Jeroboam before He took the 10 tribes out of the hands of Solomon’s son Rehoboam.

““ ‘After that, if you obey all I command you, walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight in order to keep My statutes and My commands as My servant David did, I will be with you. I will build you a lasting dynasty just as I built for David, and I will give you Israel.”

Balaam could not curse what God was blessings, but he did know that a curse would fall on the people if they were to worship false Idols and have sexual relations with the women other then Israelite women. So he instructed Balak king to Moab to have the Moab women approach the Israelite men. The end result was that the Israelite camp was lowered by 24,000.

“While Israel was staying in the Acacia Grove, the people began to have sexual relations with the women of Moab. The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods. So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor, and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.”

“...Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped, but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.”

“But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.”

So how do we take all this and apply it to us. God’s word is still true. If we follow all the commands of God we will be blessed. If we do not then we will not be blessed. If we follow God we will be blessed if we turn away from God and follow what this world has to offer we will be cursed. If we cleave to our wife or husband we will be blessed. If we leave the convent relationship to another we will not blessed for a season and we will be less blessed than had stayed with our first. I know God will forgive and bless those who have committed adultery, but it is still not the right thing to do. I an not condemning those of you who have committed adultery, but warning those who have not. We all stumble and fall short of God’s commands, but with the right repentant heart and a change of actions God can restore blessings to us.
