“All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.” Romans 8:14 HCSB
Since it is true that those led by the Holy Spirit are God’s children, then the opposite is true, those who are not lead by the Holy Spirit are not God’s children. If their not God’s children then who’s children are they? Jesus told the Pharisees that they were Children of the devil. The Pharisees were trying to justify their actions by wanting to kill Jesus. First, they boasted that they were descendants of Abraham and that they were never slaves. Jesus told them that they were slaves to sin. They then said they were Abraham’s Children. Jesus replied that if they were Abraham’s Children then they would welcome Jesus because He spoke the truth. Last they justified that they were God’s children. Jesus then told them they were not God’s children because they wanted to kill Jesus, but that they were in-fact the Devil’s Children because they were lying and murdering as he does. You can read this bypass between Jesus and the Pharisees in John 8:30-47.
So if we are not God’s children then we could be children of the Devil if we are lying and murdering. I would say most people who read this have never murdered anyone, except Jesus made it clear that if you hate someone you are the same judgment as those who are under judgment for murder.
“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Fool! ’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You moron! ’ will be subject to hellfire.”

So if lying, murder, and anger are qualities of someone who is a son of the Devil, then what are other qualities.
“Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I tell you about these things in advance — as I told you before — that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

This list pretty much sums it up if you practice these things you will not inherit the kingdom of God because you are not walking as God’s children, but as the Devil’s children.
So if we are the devil’s children we will be displaying his qualities. If we are God’s children then we will be displaying His qualities. What are the qualities of God?
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit.”

So those who are lead by God’s spirit will display love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. If we are not displaying these then more then likely we are displaying sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar.
But there is hope yet for us. Jesus died on that old rugged cross on Calvary to save us from those sins and all sins. We just have to want Him to be our savior and lord. He becomes our savior when we repent of and confess to our sins. He becomes our Lord when we obey His word and His Spirit. If you find yourself drowning in sin and unforgiveness then find God. Take time now and pray and ask God to forgive you. If you find your self in a place where you are trusting God and everything is going well keep your spirit humble knowing that when you begin to brag about your accomplishments and are no longer trusting God then God will humble you.
The more we learn to walk with God the more His qualities will show in our lives. The less we walk with God the more the devil’s qualities will show up in our lives. Sin will always take you deeper then you want to go. God will always take you farther than you will expect to go. Which will you choose? Will you choose to follow the devil into eternal death or will you follow Jesus into eternal life. I choose life. You would be wise to do the same.
“Therefore, fear the Lord and worship Him in sincerity and truth. Get rid of the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and worship Yahweh. But if it doesn’t please you to worship Yahweh, choose for yourselves today the one you will worship: the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my family, we will worship Yahweh.”
