“What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh like ours under sin’s domain, and as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be accomplished in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:3-4‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The law required a sin offering once a year for the forgiveness of sin. It was limited because that sheep or cow was not able to sin and would not have had an opportunity to be completely spotless. But God sent another, His Son, to the world. He was in the flesh just as much as we are. He experienced temptation as we face. He knows what it is like to be hungry. He knows what it is like to be tired. But He never let His flesh win, but always walked according to the Spirit.

Now the law of sin and death was fulfilled by God’s Son, Jesus. He died a death He was not required to die because He was the spotless lamb of God who knew no sin, but became sin for us.

So now it is up to us to follow His example and die according to the flesh and live according to the Spirit.

The flesh is contrary to God.

“Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I tell you about these things in advance — as I told you before — that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

But the Spirit is in complete alignment with God.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law.”

So we have a battle that wages in our body. We have the flesh pulling us toward sin, and the Spirit pulling us toward God. Last, of all, we have our soul. It is the neutral party that we can sway toward the world or God. If we continually feed it the world it will become less sensitive to the Spirit and will align with the flesh. Or we can feed it God and it will become less sensitive to the flesh and will align with the Spirit.  This choice is up to us.

Sin is condemned in us because of Jesus’ work on the cross. Now glorify God with your body and give no room for the flesh to win over your soul.

“Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.”

“Let us walk with decency, as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires.”
