“In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.” Romans 8:26 HCSB
This is the third groans we find here in Romans 8. The first was the creation (verse 22) waiting for the sons of God. The second is us (verse 23) waiting and hoping for Jesus’ return.
Now the Holy Spirit groans with unspoken words to speak to God on behalf of people. Sometimes we may not know what to pray in certain situations and all we can say is ”Jesus”. The Spirit is working during those times to intercede for us.
Jesus has prayed for us and He still is!
“I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message. May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us, so the world may believe You sent Me.”
John 17:20-21 HCSB

He was praying that we would be unified and not divided with each other. But also that we would be unified with God just as much as Jesus is with God. I would be willing to say that this is what the Holy Spirit is groaning about in us when we don't know what to say.
The Holy Spirit is given to us as a downpayment to secure our hope in salvation. We then have the same character in us that Jesus showed while living on earth. The Holy Spirit is here to help us. we have no need to be afraid of Him! At times we are intimidated by the unknown. He is our counselor to help us. One way He helps us is to groan in us to God. He helps us to know what to say at the right time. He helps us remember the Words of God so that we may not put out His fire in us. The Holy Spirit is in us to help us, embrace Him.
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”

“So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say. On the contrary, whatever is given to you in that hour — say it. For it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.”
Mark 13:11 HCSB

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit — the Father will send Him in My name — will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.”
