“We must, therefore, pay even more attention to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1 HCSB

The more we learn the more accountable we are. God holds people who study and learn the Bible to a higher standard of holiness than those ignorant of His word.

“For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,”

Hebrews 10:26 HCSB

This may scare people away from seeking knowledge and wisdom through the Word of God. But it should not because God will give us greater victory over sin. As we study and learn we begin to find the faith that if God said not to then we will not, and if God says to do we will.

“Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, obey it, and teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.”

Ezra 7:10 HCSB

Ezra certainly had this figured out. He knew that the word of God was to be studied. But he did not stop there he began to obey it. As he obeyed it he began to teach it all over Israel. He was a man of the word of God. Psalm 119 is not given an author, but it may have been Ezra.

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm and in the 176 verses, just about everyone talks about God’s word. Whoever wrote it loved the Word of God. He saw it as a lamp to his feet (vs 105). He wanted to obey it and He wanted it to direct his life. He found truth in it and was unwilling to go through life without it.

“But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but one who does good works — this person will be blessed in what he does.”

James 1:22-25 HCSB

If the Bible does not become practiced in our life we begin to deceive ourselves and not the ones around us. God wants us to be different than the world. The world expects us to be different from them. Why would they want to follow Jesus if they see Christians in the same miserable sin that they find themselves in?

“But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.”

“Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
