“Don’t be like them (idolators), because your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him.” Matthew 6:8 HCSB

I added ”(idolators)” for clarification.

So the idolators we learned in verse 7 like to ramble on and on and on and on in their prayers to their god. But we are not to. Why? Because God knows we what we need before we ask. Then why do we need to ask? By asking we put our trust in God.

If we do not ask God for the things we need and they were just handed to us, we would become spoiled children expecting everything to be handed to us beyond what we need into everything we want. But God is a good father so He wants us to ask so that when we do get it we are thankful to Him for it.

“What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
Matthew 7:9-11 HCSB

God wants our trust to be in Him. I heard on the radio one time, that all of us want our kids to grow up and be independent, move out on their own, but we should be training them to be dependent on God, teaching them to lean on Him for everything. We here in America can order just about anything we want from Amazon and have it in one or two days. I even saw where they are offering like three-hour grocery delivery. It will not be much longer before they start delivering everything on the same day. We have lost our need to wait for anything. But God does not operate like Amazon, He may ask us to wait until He gives us what we need. He delivers just in time. He knows we need it before we ask, and He deliverers exactly when we need it.

“The Lord does not delay His promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 HCSB
