“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6:22 HCSB

Why does Jesus say eye and not eyes?

He could be talking about your mind’s eye. Your imagination or meditation. What you meditate or think about will be your treasure and then your body will chase after.

Or He could be saying that the things you see with even one eye can fill you with light.

We can see that either can be the case. For the most part, I want to focus on our eyes.

We have three gates into our body, Eyes, ears, and mouth. Jesus tells us that whatever goes into the mouth does not make us holy or defiled (Matthew 15:17 HCSB). So this leaves us with two gates to get into our body, the eyes, and the ears. Both feed our minds. We can either fill it with God resulting in light or of evil resulting in darkness.

“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.”
Joshua 1:8 HCSB

“How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path of sinners or join a group of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.”
Psalms 1:1-2 HCSB

“My eyes grow weary looking for Your salvation and for Your righteous promise.”
Psalms 119:123 HCSB

So some practical ways to keep our eyes and ears good. Read your Bible. Listen to your Bible. Read uplifting books. Watch wholesome tv and movies. Listen to Christian music. Listen to wholesome conversations. I think you get the idea. Then how do we keep our mind’s eye clean? Think about such things.

Paul said it this way:

“Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise — dwell on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 HCSB
