“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this I hear such things about? ” And he wanted to see Him.” Luke 9:9 HCSB

Herod had spent his life looking for Jesus. I am sure that he did not neglect his official rule as “king”, but every opportunity that he heard the Jesus was around he hoped to see Jesus. But Jesus seemed to slip out unnoticed. Until one day Herod heard that Pilot was sending him a prisoner.

“Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see Him because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by Him.”
Luke 23:8 HCSB

But Jesus did no miracle because now was not the time for miracles but of deep greed and concern. Jesus was to the point of death and He had to say in the will of God. 

“We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth.”
Isaiah 53:6-7 HCSB

The will of God was the prophecy of Isaiah to be silent. Jesus did not walk into the palace in all His splendor and majesty, as he will when He returns. But He still walked in there with all his power and authority. He was the one in control of the situation and not Pilot or Herod. 

“You would have no authority over Me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.”
John 19:11 HCSB

Pilot had reservations about killing Jesus, but Herod did not. He had mocked Jesus and beat Him and then sent Him back to Pilot. All his life He had wanted to see Jesus, but he failed to see the real Jesus He was just looking for some miracle.

“But He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.”
Matthew 12:39-40 HCSB

The only sign Herod would see would be that in three days Jesus will walk out of His own tomb. 

What about us? Are we looking to see a sign from Jesus or are looking to see the master? Consider the words to the old Gospel Hymn, “Open our eyes, Lord”.

Open our eyes, Lord
We want to see Jesus
To reach out and touch Him
And say that we love Him
Open our ears, Lord
And help us to listen
Open our eyes, Lord
We want to see Jesus


Is your desire to see Jesus? Don’t spend your whole life looking for a miracle, instead look to the one who is doing the miracle. Don’t look with your eyes but look with your heart. Don’t miss Jesus when He standing in front of you.
