“If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” Luke 9:5 HCSB
Peace was given to anyone who would welcome them but the dust that was stuck on their feet was removed if they were not welcomed. The disciples were to remove anything that belonged to that city.
Paul used this in Antioch.
“But the Jews incited the prominent women, who worshiped God, and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their district. But they shook the dust off their feet against them and went to Iconium.”

Paul is tired of going to the jews first. every city Paul would go the synagogue to preach Jesus to the Jews and every time they would chase him out. So then a few gentiles would find him and bring others along and Paul would preach, teach, and disciple the gentiles. On this occasion, in Antioch, the Jews chased them not only out of the synagogue but out of the whole district. When they were far enough and they stop chasing Paul and his companions Paul turned around and shook off the dust of that city.
At times we may have tried and tried to talk to people about God and have felt that we were getting nowhere but frustrated. This might be a good time to shake off the dust and stop talking about God to them and start talking to God about them. Start asking God to open a door to help them see Jesus. Or times may come when we face serious opposition to the Gospel of Jesus at which point we do not have to stick around and fight and argue about God, but we are to leave that place and find a new city that will welcome Jesus. For the most part, most of us will never, most of us will never have to shake the dust off our feet because we have been rejected or push out because of our relationship with Jesus.
“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.”

One of the best ways to win a person for Jesus is to serve them a basic need, love. One of our family’s favorite TV shows is Hartland. In the latest episode, Ty and Amy have been dealt some bad publicly by one person. Ty tries to talk with this person one last time but he just pushes Ty back into his truck. As ty was leaving Ty sees him struggling to get the horses out of the barn. So Ty helps him get them out of the barn. In the end the man apologies and declares that Ty and Amy did nothing wrong. Ty could not talk to this man before but because of his act of love, he won this man’s heart.
Be love to people and they can’t deny Jesus after the fact!
“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:34-35 HCSB
