“Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; wounding him, it hardly ever leaves him.” Luke 9:39 HCSB
This Child was demon-possessed. Something happened during the child’s life and a demon was invited into this boy’s body. I don’t think we know what caused it but the fact remains that it did happen.
The life we see here on Earth is only half of what is really going on. There is a spiritual life that is not seen. It consists of Godly forces and satanic forces. God is the only all-powerful being. Satan and his minions only have power on this earth because Adam gave up his God-given the power to subdue the earth. And today if we don’t live by the Spirit of God we let satan retain this power even though Jesus’ time in the tomb won this power back for us.
God has set up His system on in the earth and through all the created universe and Satan tries to copy it as much as possible. While God can be everywhere at the same time, Satan cannot. The Holy Spirit of God can dwell in people and satan has to send one of his fallen angels to dwell in people. Once a person is set free from an evil spirit they must fill their life with God or the demon will come back and try to take them by force and will grab a few others to help.
“When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn’t find any. Then it says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ And returning, it finds the house vacant, swept, and put in order. Then off it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man’s last condition is worse than the first. That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.”
Matthew 12:43-45 HCSB
There are churches and people who say that after the resurrection of Jesus that demon possession stopped. I beg to differ. Why would it be part of our commission in Mark to drive out evil spirits?
“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; they will pick up snakes; if they should drink anything deadly, it will never harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”
Mark 16:17-18 HCSB
Why did Paul have to drive out demons?
“God was performing extraordinary miracles by Paul’s hands, so that even facecloths or work aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.”
Acts 19:11-12 HCSB
The people who don’t want to see demon possession will not because they will look the other way or find some “medical” way to explain it away. But talk to third world missionaries and they will tell you that demon possession is real and they don’t have to look far to find it. If it is real there it is real here! If God said it is real it is real!
In College, I had a friend that would space out and exhibit feats of strength that was not possible. He would threaten people bigger then he was. As my roommate was praying about this He told me that my friend was demon-possessed and that I would be the one to drive it out. So a month or so of me praying about it, I fasted and prayed one day and gathered a few of my other friends to watch and pray, and though God’s power I drove that demon out that night. So you can never convince me that it is not real.
I do think it is on the rise again in America and the drug epidemic is empowered it. These drugs are giving people overwhelming strength to fight against nurses and doctors who try to subdue them.
“Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus that Paul preaches! ” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. The evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I recognize Paul — but who are you? ” Then the man who had the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them all, and prevailed against them, so that they ran out of that house naked and wounded.”
Acts 19:13-16 HCSB
Satan knows his time is growing short and he is ramping up his attempts to secure his kingdom and take as many people with him as possible.
“For at that time there will be great tribulation, the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again! Unless those days were limited, no one would survive. But those days will be limited because of the elect.”
Matthew 24:21-22 HCSB
“Watch out, brothers, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.”
Hebrews 3:12-13 HCSB
