“But they did not understand this statement; it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.” Luke 9:45 HCSB

The statement was in verse 44: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.

Jesus’ command was for them to let it sink in. But the meaning was lost to them until it was revealed to them on the day of Pentecost.

“But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Men of Judah and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words.

Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him.”
Acts 2:14, 23 HCSB

Often we want to understand before we let the Word of God sink in. But often God wants His word to sink in before we understand. God will give us a word and it is our job to hang on to that word until it becomes true. It then becomes the Holy Sprit’s job to reveal to us the meaning of His word.

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.”
John 16:13 HCSB

Peter and the apostles did not grasp the words spoken by Jesus, but they kept it in mind (meditation) until it was revealed to them. 

Awareness, Meditation, and Revelation

Jesus made them aware that He was going to be handed over to the hands of men. The 12 began to meditate about the meaning of it. It was revealed to them later.

When God drops a word into your life don’t dismiss it, but hang on to it. Think about it. Memorize it. Post it. Remind God of it. And in the appropriate season, The Holy Spirit will enlighten it to you.

“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.”

“Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.”

“Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, obey it, and teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.”
