“Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them.” Luke 9:46 HCSB

Deep down most if not all of what to be someone important. We want to have it all and have people respect us because of what we have. But the disciples took it a step farther and started arguing among each other of who would be the greatest in Jesus’ Kingdom. it went from a good feeling of accomplishment to a feeling of pride. It went as far, or maybe it started with, a proud mother asking Jesus to make her sons second and third in His Kingdom.

“Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached Him with her sons. She knelt down to ask Him for something. “What do you want? ” He asked her. “Promise,” she said to Him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right and the other on Your left, in Your kingdom.”

“Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.”

John 18:15 HCSB

John’s gospel is the only one who records another disciple with Peter. This leads us to believe that it was John. His relationship with the high priest let them into the place which caused Peter to come in contact with the people who would ask if he was Jesus’ disciple also. 

Maybe John’s dad helped supply the temple with fish for the workers and priests. Maybe His dad just grew up as friends with the high priest we don’t know how they knew each other but we know that John was an acquaintance of the high priest.  

So what do we do with the feeling that We are someone important in the grand scheme of life?

we humble ourselves and resist the urge to get puff up with pride because the glory belongs to God alone. He is the one who has given us the ability to accomplish what has made us “great”. He is the one that supplies us with all our stuff and wealth. 

“In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.”
