Love is the distinguishing attribute in God, in His son, in His kids. Buddha, Allah, and any other god is a product of the Devil and is not based on love but on works. God created love out of His love for Adam and Eve and their children. While the Devil copies the works God wants His children to do and made those works how to serve these other gods. Without love, the Christian is walking in darkness. With love, the Christian is walking in the light of God. 

Who are we to love? Your spouse?

I do believe this covers everyone from your spouse, to neighbors, to your enemies! So if we are hating anyone we are not walking in the love God expects us to grant to everyone.
