” Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:14‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Our tongue has power. It can be used for blessing. It can be used for cursing. It all depends on what we want our listeners to hear. I would rather hear blessings. So why should I spill out curses toward others? Our persecutors want us to be cursed but we should want them to hear blessings. The easy thing would be to curse them back but then we only stoop down to their level.

“Don’t answer a fool according to his foolishness or you’ll be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his foolishness or he’ll become wise in his own eyes.”

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭18:21‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

A story is told of a pastor who asked God, “Can I use curse words when I preach?”
God replied, “ If you feel it is required.”
“Thanks God,” came his reply. As he preached he began to use some curse words to drive his point home and it felt good so he continued to curse more and more. After a year he went back to God and said, “I see now that cursing was never really helpful and now I can’t stop. Will you please help me to stop?”
“Nope” started God, “you wanted this so you will have to stop on your own.”

Curses come easy for us. When people learn a new language usually they want to pick up the curse words after they have learned the basics. But to not let them out takes loads of self-control. And I do believe God will help us if we ask. One way To help God is to fill your life with blessings. Listen to positive encouraging people. Listen to the word of God. Speak to yourself the way you want to hear your self talk.

Often it is not the word that is the curse, but rather the meaning behind the word. It is the attitude behind the word that makes it bad or good. Jesus Christ is not a bad word until we use it out of context as a blame for something bad that just happened. As if Jesus was the cause of what went wrong in our life. I would say it was not Jesus’ fault but our own. Jesus is willing to forgive us.

“I assure you: People will be forgiven for all sins and whatever blasphemies they may blaspheme. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭3:28-29‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The Holy Spirit on the other hand is not so forgiving. So what does it look like to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?

The context of what was happening in Mark 3 is that the spiritual rulers were claiming that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of a demon and not by God. So they were calling the work of the Holy Spirit works of the devil. That is blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.

Will blaspheming against the Holy Spirit send you to hell? I don’t think so. But rather when we begin to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit He will cause us to do exactly what we thought was not of Him to show us that it was Him the first time. Now those who do not want to be lead by the Holy Spirit will discredit what He is up too and may not taste the fullness of what God has in store for them.

Bless and do not curse. Use discernment before you discredit the work of the Holy Spirit.
