“Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:10‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

This is where the world has gotten it wrong. They want to take brotherly love and make it an erotic love. They point to David and Jonathan and say that they loved each other as a man should love His wife. But their love was like brothers than a spouse.

“When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone Ezel, fell with his face to the ground, and bowed three times. Then he and Jonathan kissed each other and wept with each other, though David wept more.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭20:41‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

it is perfectly normal to have a best friend that you are close enough to cry and hug, but it is not ok to be romantically attached to them as you would a wife or husband.

There is a couple at a church we attended that the wife was a hugger and she told us why. When her family gets together you must hug everyone on your way in the door and you must hug everyone that comes in after you. then on your way out you hug everyone before you leave and sometimes even twice. That is one way to show family affection. Everyone is family in the family of God. There are other families that will just shake hands as you depart. Whatever your family’s way of showing affection is how you are to greet the family of God. But keep it at that and do not let it become something more.

“Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.”

Today in western society this kiss is to be lips to cheek. But in the early church, it may have been lips to lips in the same gender only. We have made this kind of kiss special to dating, engaged, or married relationship.

John Piper in Desiring God explained it this way.

“Kissing is not uniquely Christian. It is not a uniquely Christian affection. And what the apostles say is: Take it from the world and sanctify it. Make it holy. Devote it to God. Make it say something about the Holy One. Include God in your hearts and in your thoughts when you greet one another with this ordinary, culturally common greeting. ... I encourage all of you guys to fist bump with a holy fist bump.”

So however your family greets each other, greet the family of God in a holy way that will lift each other up. Remember we are honoring each other and not honoring ourselves. We are not to lord over but come alongside each other.

“But Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and the men of high position exercise power over them. It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life — a ransom for many.”

“By obedience to the truth, having purified yourselves for sincere love of the brothers, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,”
