“For they, earthly fathers, disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:10‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

I inserted earthly fathers to clarify from verse 9.

We as parents have a responsibility to discipline our kids so that when they grow up they behave as God sees fit. The same way God disciplines us as He sees fit so that we may live a life according to His will and His holiness.

“Foolishness is tangled up in the heart of a youth; the rod of discipline will drive it away from him.”

“Don’t withhold discipline from a youth; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.”

“A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a youth left to himself is a disgrace to his mother.”

“For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:8-11‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

If we being evil have been commanded to correct our children, then God being holy will correct His children. We being evil know how to give good things to our kids. God who is holy will also give us good gifts, and good discipline.

We love God when He gives us good gifts, but we despise His correction, discipline, and punishment. Should we also rejoice in His correction because it has come to our lives to mold us into His holiness?

Our response to discipline should be the same as Job’s response to His testing Satan inflected him with to where we are praising God for the hardships in our life because, in the end, we will come out twice the person as the person who went in.

“Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes.
His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die! ”
“You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity? ” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.”
‭‭Job‬ ‭2:8-10‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his prosperity and doubled his previous possessions.

So the Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life more than the first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters.”
‭‭Job‬ ‭42:10, 12-13‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

His three friends came to comfort him during what they thought was discipline, but in time God had Job pray for his three friends because they had sinned in blaming God for Job’s great loss.

“After the Lord had finished speaking to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has. Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you. I will surely accept his prayer and not deal with you as your folly deserves. For you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has.” Then Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.”
