“You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10:19‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Do not murder.

Do not commit adultery.

Do not steal.

Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20:12-17‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Jesus was now challenging this rich young ruler’s relationship with people. These six commands are the last six that have to do with his, and our, relationship with people.

“Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest? ”

He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22:36-40‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:13‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not covet; and whatever other commandment — all are summed up by this: Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Love, therefore, is the fulfillment of the law.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭13:8-10‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The principle behind these six is that whatever you would like someone else to do to you, do it to them first. No one would like to be stolen from or lied to or killed, then we should not steal from others, lie to those around us, or hate anyone. We are to love them as Jesus loved us first.

“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

‭‭John‬ ‭13:34-35‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The old command was to do unto others as they have done unto you, or better to do to others as you would what them to do to you. But Jesus has upped the example. Jesus laid down his life so that we, His church, could be with Him. Who of us would be willing to die so that a brother or sister may live? or who would set aside time in their busy lives to serve a brother or sister? or who would be willing to do without so that a brother or sister may have?

“Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:3-4‬ ‭HCSB‬‬
