“But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? ” Mark 10:38 HCSB
What was Jesus’ cup? What was His baptism?
“Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from Me — nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Jesus’ cup was everything from Judas’ betrayal to His burial in the borrowed tomb. It was betrayal by his fellow countrymen, being beaten by the Romans. It was 3 hours suffering on the cross. It was being cast from the presence of God. Jesus’ cup was the most humiliating thing He had to do. Are you James and John ready to endure all this for a high position in His glory?
“But John tried to stop Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?”
Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then he allowed Him to be baptized. After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him. And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!”

Jesus’ baptism was to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth. From this point on John’s ministry began to fade as Jesus’ began to grow. And Jesus would begin to show more of the world the kingdom of God until the full kingdom of God would be established in the hearts of people in all nations. Some major points of Jesus’s baptism would include the cleaning of God’s house, The curtain being torn, and Jesus rising from the dead holding the keys that He rightly took back from the Devil.
“He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those who were selling, and He said, “It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves! ”

“Then the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom.”

“and the Living One. I was dead, but look — I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades.”

Jesus’ cup was the salvation of all people who should come to him. Jesus’ baptism was to disciple the 12 and anyone else who would listen to him.
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”

“From that moment many of His disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Him. Therefore Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you? ” Simon Peter answered, “Lord, who will we go to? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that You are the Holy One of God! ”

Jesus fulfilled both of these missions in His life!

“I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze! But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how it consumes Me until it is finished! Do you think that I came here to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!”
Luke 12:49-51 HCSB

Jesus Baptism causes division here on earth but unity in Heaven.
“Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying: Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign! Let us be glad, rejoice, and give Him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has prepared herself. She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure. For the fine linen represents the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: Those invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb are fortunate!” He also said to me, “These words of God are true. ”
