“But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10:43-44‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Servant — one who runs errands, a waiter

Slave — Bondservant, devoted to another to the disregard of one's own interests.

(Both definitions was taken from Blue Letter Bible interliner concordance)

All too often when we hear about a slave we get the image of a person forced to serve in unhealthy conditions, like a few but not all of the American slaveowners. But To be a bondservant of Jesus and His Church is not out of compulsion but rather love. Listen to how God describes a bondservant or slave in the Old testament.

“When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for six years; then in the seventh he is to leave as a free man without paying anything. If he arrives alone, he is to leave alone; if he arrives with a wife, his wife is to leave with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children belong to her master, and the man must leave alone. “But if the slave declares: ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I do not want to leave as a free man,’ his master is to bring him to the judges and then bring him to the door or doorpost. His master must pierce his ear with an awl, and he will serve his master for life.”

‭‭Exodus‬ ‭21:2-6‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The slave had no requirement to serve after six years, but because He was treated rightly as a decent human being and in-turn loved his master then He would get his ear pierced by his master to show he was a bondservant to his mater and as a sign of his mater that he would treat his servant with the same love and care as he did before.

The servants and bondservants of Jesus loves serving their master Jesus and will love all the other slaves and servants of Jesus. The one who serves Jesus and His church out of compulsion does not understand who he is serving and will get burned out and quit. But the one who will serve out of love will continue to serve God for the right reasons.

Whatever God has for you today do it out of love and not devotion and you will see the Love of God working through you!
