I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who don’t need repentance. Luke 15:7 HCSB

Often when we think of this verse we think of a non-Christian becoming a Christian, but what about the Christian who needs to repent. Does God and all of heaven rejoice in their repentance? I am not talking about a wayward son or daughter of God, but a blood-bought Spirit-filled believer, your everyday Christian.

I have a shirt that says "Y'all need Jesus". This is my favorite shirt to wear around church folk. I want it to emphasize that we all truly need Jesus. For those righteous people who do not need repentance, you need Jesus. For those everyday Christians, you need Jesus.  For the wayward sons and daughters, you need Jesus. For the non-Christian,  you need Jesus.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

What then? Are we any better? Not at all! For we have previously charged that both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin, as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away; all alike have become useless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one.

You see that no one is righteous before God, we are all sinners falling short of His righteousness. But listen to what He says about us.

"So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.

But the father told his slaves, ‘Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let’s celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! ’ So they began to celebrate.

But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”

God is outside His house looking for us waiting for us to repent. He is there when we are at our darkest moments waiting and willing for us to turn from our sin and begin to walk back toward home. You see the longer we wait the farther we have to travel to get back home. Don't wait until you are knee-deep in the mud with the pigs, repent as soon as you step outside the fence of God's house and come running back into His forgiveness.
