Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming the Christ to them.

“Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming the Christ to them. The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what was being said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing. For in the case of many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed or limped on crutches were healed.

But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Get ready and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.)

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.

As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he ordered that the chariot stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea.”

Philip the Evangelist is not to be confused with Philip the Apostle. With the persecution growing in Jerusalem the church was scattered but the apostles stayed in Jerusalem (Acts 8:1). Philip was chosen as one of the seven to serve with Stephen who was of good reputation, full of the spirit, and wisdom (Acts 6:3-5). Being full of the Spirit Philip left Jerusalem and began to minister in Samaria. The same region that Jesus talked with the woman at the well (John 4). Where he begins to preach, heal and cast out demons. But one thing does not happen the Holy Spirit does not fall! So the church sends Peter and John up to Samaria. When they get there they lay their hands on the new converts to Christ and the Holy Spirit falls on them.

Philip is looked down on because he was not given the ability to lay on of hands to give the Holy Spirit, yet he was filled with the Spirit a few chapters ago. I believe that he did have the baptism of the Holy Spirit but for some reason, God was wanting to push Peter and John out of Jerusalem into Samara.

Jesus wants us to minister in our Jerusalems but often he wants to push us toward our Judeas, Samaras, and to the ends of our world. But only by the power of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses for Him.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.”
