Fish or whale or something else

“Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish,”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭2:1‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Alright, let’s settle this argument! Did Jonah get swallowed by a whale or a fish? It should be noted that whale is only found in the KJV version. Most other translations call it a great sea monster

“God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:21‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Sea monster in the Hebrew is tannîn

Fish in the Hebrew is dāḡâ and dāḡ

According to Jonah's own book, he called it a fish! But let’s see what Jesus called it after all Jesus made it and Jonah may have only seen its mouth or stomach.

“for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭12:40‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

“However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:27‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Sea monster in Greek is kētos

Fish in Greek is ichthys

So Jesus called it a sea monster. He does not call it a fish.

Greek translates Jonah’s fish to kētos - a sea monster. So in our New Testament, the greek word sea monster is only used once but in a greek bible it is used seven times in Genesis, Job, and Jonah

“Let those curse it who curse the day, Who are prepared to rouse Leviathan.”

‭‭Job‬ ‭3:8‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

So I think it is safe to say that Jonah was not swallowed by a fish like bass, carp, walleye, pike, or sturgeon. And was not swallowed by a shark or any other sea animal that would grab, tear, and kill its prey. But this animal would swallow its prey whole like a whale, dolphin, or extremely large fish.

Here is a good read about what they think swallowed Jonah, think Moby Dick. https://armstronginstitute.org/315-what-was-the-great-fish-that-swallowed-jonah

So is it settled? If Jesus called it a sea monster than it was a sea monster and not a fish!
