Unity with God and people

​“Can two walk together without agreeing to meet?”

Unity is the theme today in Amos 3. It is a topic that is touched on in Jesus’s prayer before the garden of Gathemme. 

“that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;”

So what does unity look like? It is two people walking in the same direction at the same time. It is not one following the other or walking in opposite directions. If they were to walk with the same stride we would say they are in unison which would be a higher degree of unity. 

“Indeed, the Lord God does nothing without revealing His counsel to His servants the prophets.”

When we walk in unity with God He will make his will and plans known to us and for others. Paul desired that all people should prophesy, therefore becoming prophets. Two examples come to mind. First, Abraham. 

“Then the Lord said, “Should I hide what I am about to do from Abraham?”

God is getting ready to send two of His angels to Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim. But He would first tell Abraham. And Abraham pressed God to spare the people of the cities if He found more than 15.

The second is Simeon. 

“And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”

Simeon was an old man who spent time with God and knew that during his lifetime He would see and hold Jesus. And He did when Jesus was 8 days old when Mary and Joseph brought Him into the temple as proscribed by The Law. 

I do believe that in the last days there will be people who will know that they will not taste death but will be part of the rapture. For God will reveal His plan to them. 

“The people are incapable of doing right — this is the Lord’s declaration — those who store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”

This is what people are capable of if they unite with others who are not united with God. What does Paul say? 

“Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

But before we jump into condemning gathering together in fear we might be gathering with bad company, Jesus affirms that the gathering of His people with Him as their focus is a good thing. 

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there among them.”

“and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”

So who are we unified with? Are we first unified with God? Then unified with other followers of Jesus? And lastly, are we around others to be an influence on them?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;”
