What happens when authority believes in God?

“When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes.”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:6‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

What happens when authority believes God?

1. The people believe in God

“Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:5‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

2. Laws reflect Godly values

“He issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:7‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

4. The people are humble

Both citizens and the king began fasting and sitting in ashes (verses 5,6).

5. They call on God

“But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:8‬a NASB1995‬‬

6. They turn from evil toward God

“that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands.”

‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:8‬b NASB1995‬‬

When was the last time our sin took us to fasting and prayer? When was the last time the sins of our nation compelled our nation to fasting and prayer?

“and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭7:14‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

“Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As the Lord lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭12:16‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/jer.12.16.NASB1995

“They shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭32:38-40‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

“Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes, that his heart may not be lifted up above his countrymen and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may continue long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.”

I look forward to the day when Jesus is the only ruler and all is restored to His plan and purpose

“I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
