Names of God “Holy” and “Rock”

“Are You not from everlasting, O Lord, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O Lord, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct.”

‭‭Habakkuk‬ ‭1‬:‭12‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

As I was reading Habakkuk this morning this verse stood out to me because of the many names of God used by Habakkuk.

You (not in original Greek)

O Lord Yᵊhōvâ

my God ĕlōhîm

my Holy One qāḏôš

You (not in original Greek)

O Lord Yᵊhōvâ

You (not in original Greek)

O Rock ṣûr

Most of us have heard Yᵊhōvâ and ĕlōhîm, but what about qāḏôš and ṣûr? Qāḏôš is literally Holy. And ṣûr is a Rock cliff.

“And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭6‬:‭3‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/isa.6.3.NASB1995

“And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/rev.4.8.NASB1995

Is God Holy, Holy, Holy to us? Or is He just kinda holy?

“But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭115‬:‭3‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/psa.115.3.NASB1995

We can look at this and say, “Well God is going to do whatever He wants so why try.” But rather it should be, “God you are in control of everything and I want to be in the middle of it!” That is the difference between kinda holy and Holy, Holy, Holy.

“To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭92‬:‭15‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/psa.92.15.NASB1995

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭18‬:‭2‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/psa.18.2.NASB1995

“Blessed be the Lord, my rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle;”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭144‬:‭1‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/psa.144.1.NASB1995

The Psalmists relied on God as their Rock! Their cliff to protect them from the enemy’s attacks. While the first two Psalms (92:15 and 18:2) are refuge rocks the last Psalm (144:1) is God being his strength to fight in battle all the way down to his fingers to grip his sword and shield!

“Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm (on The Rock) therefore, having girded your loins with (Holy) truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (Holy living), and having shod your feet with the preparation of the (Holy) gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith (with Rock-like grip) with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (with Rock-like grip), which is the word of God. With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭13‬-‭18‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

(Parentheses added by me for emphasis on Holy and Rock)

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭10‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/pro.18.10.NASB1995

Which name? O Lord Yᵊhōvâ, my God ĕlōhîm, my Holy One qāḏôš, O Rock ṣûr? All of them! O Lord my God Holy One my Rock is a strong tower. For we are declaring that on God we are depending and leaning on and trusting in!

As a fun note!

My Holy One qāḏôš is pronounced kaw-doshe'. This sounds very much like the line Poe uses in Kung fu Panda to banish Ty Long “Skadoosh,"

There is one other Name of God that is similar to another line used in Martial arts.

“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ””

‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3‬:‭14‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/100/exo.3.14.NASB1995

I Am is pronounced “haw-yaw”. Sounds familiar to “Kiai” the initial word that starts a karate fight. Did Poe declare the name of God “Rock” to disband Ty Long? Does Karate start a fight with the name of God “I AM”? I don’t know but they do sound similar!
