Seek God with a clean head

“Make yourself bald and cut off your hair, Because of the children of your delight; Extend your baldness like the eagle, For they will go from you into exile.”

‭‭Micah‬ ‭1:16‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

To make oneself bald in the Old Testament was a sign of being released from the uncleanness of leprosy.

“The one to be cleansed shall then wash his clothes and shave off all his hair and bathe in water and be clean. Now afterward, he may enter the camp, but he shall stay outside his tent for seven days. It will be on the seventh day that he shall shave off all his hair: he shall shave his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair. He shall then wash his clothes and bathe his body in water and be clean.”

To let your hair grow long was a sign of dedication to God.

“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to dedicate himself to the Lord,

‘All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy until the days are fulfilled for which he separated himself to the Lord; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long.

The Nazirite shall then shave his dedicated head of hair at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and take the dedicated hair of his head and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings.”

‭‭Numbers‬ ‭6:2, 5, 18‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

But now, Micah is challenging the people of Judah and Israel to shave for their kids. Why? Their sin and guilt have reached full measure in God’s eyes. He is getting ready to send Israel into exile. And one last time God is asking them to repent and turn from their sins in an extreme nature. Not just say the words but to put humility on themselves for their own sin.

“Stop covering it up with your long hair and seek me with a clean head. Stop looking the part of a Nazarite and begin acting like a humiliated man because of My guilt which I pour on you.”

Ouch!

“For if you return to the Lord, your brothers and your sons will find compassion before those who led them captive and will return to this land. For the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate, and will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
