Wake you up with a reminder!
“Therefore I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you have. I consider it right, as long as I am in this bodily tent, to wake you up with a reminder,”
2 Peter 1:12-13 HCSB
Peter wants to remind his readers of what things?
“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.”
2 Peter 1:5-7 HCSB
Before we get into these I want to point out other things these things are for
“For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins. Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, because if you do these things you will never stumble. For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you.”
2 Peter 1:8-11 HCSB
If these qualities are yours you are fruitful and useful. If you forget these qualities you will be blind and shortsighted. That is to say, you will be blinded by your current storm and forget the provision from God through all your past storms. If these are yours you will never stumble. If you have these entry into His kingdom will be richly supplied to you.
What are these things Brian get on with it! Ok, I will!
It all starts with faith. By faith, we are saved.
Faith steps up to goodness. Living according to the purpose of God.
Goodness grows into knowledge. We learn from the Bible and others how to live for God.
Knowledge gives way to self-control. The spirit moves in and begins to direct your actions.
Self-control breeds endurance. “I have made it before I will make it today!”
Endurance grows into godliness. Because He has got me out before I will begin to act like Him toward other people.
Godliness matures into brotherly affection. I will be able to weep with those who weep and shout with those who shout.
brotherly affection becomes love. Love that is beyond brotherly love but is God’s love toward everyone!
Where have you stopped? Where are you now? Did you stop at self-control and not make it to endurance? But now self-control and knowledge are lacking in your life. Begin to grow knowledge in your life and begin pursuing self-control until you have obtained endurance so that way you may continue to grow toward Godliness, brotherly affection, and love.
