The remnant remains
“Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life! But what was God’s reply to him? I have left 7,000 men for Myself who have not bowed down to Baal.”
Romans 11:3-4 HCSB
Paul is quoting from 1 Kings 19. We know the story very well. It is the story of the still small voice but do we know the back story and the conversations sounding it? Elijah has just got done killing all the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and now he is running for his life because Jezebel is after him in all her furry. In his fleeing, he took a rest under a broom tree and God supplied an angel and some bread which gave him energy for a 40-day and 40-night hike to the Mountian of Horeb where he finally collapsed in a cave.
“He entered a cave there and spent the night. Then the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah? ”
He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Hosts, but the Israelites have abandoned Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are looking for me to take my life.”
The lord passed by, a wind, an earthquake, and a fire accompanied Him but He was only in the still small voice afterward.
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah? ”
“I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have abandoned Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.”
1 Kings 9:13-14 HCSB
Go and anoint the next king of Aram, Israel, and the next prophet after you. Whoever escapes the judgment of the king of Aram will face the judgment of Israel. Whoever escapes the judgment of Israel will face the judgment of my prophet.
“But I will leave 7,000 in Israel — every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Elijah was facing a time when the government was at odds with the Lord and he felt that he was all alone, but God had other plans.
Today in this world we may feel isolated, rejected, and alone, but have no fear, God still has a remnant in every government, nation, state, and county across the world. Our job is to find and connect with those who will stand with us during this chaos that our government has put us in.
“Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:23-25 HCSB
For The Day is drawing near and I believe we are in the last of the last days! So encourage yourself and find others to encourage each day.
“Watch out, brothers, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception. For we have become companions of the Messiah if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start.”
Hebrews 3:12-14 HCSB
“For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 HCSB
