Overview of Romans 16

Overview of Romans 16

1 person was commended by Paul, Phoebe!

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church in Cenchreae. So you should welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints and assist her in whatever matter she may require your help. For indeed she has been a benefactor of many — and of me also.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭16‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

17 greetings to people or churches (I am counting how many times greet was used not how many people to greet)

4 greeting towards the Roman church

21 total greetings

Verses 17 - 20 is a warning “to keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances.

“The report of your obedience has reached everyone. Therefore I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise about what is good, yet innocent about what is evil.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭16‬:‭19‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Paul is commending the beloved of God in Rome on their obedience but is warning them to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil. We as the beloved of God should be experts in what is good and have little clue about what is evil. Who among us is an expert on mixing drinks? This knowledge should only be from their past and not a current obsession. Who of us is an expert on prayer or the Bible or any other good deed? This should come from our love of Jesus and not a forced discipline!

Verses 24-27 are what is called a doxology of Paul’s letter to the beloved of Rome. It is one of many that many American churches will use to end a church service. If it was good enough for Paul to sign off with his letter it might be a good way to send the saints in the church off into their worlds “till we meet again”!

“Now to Him who has power to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation about Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept silent for long ages but now revealed and made known through the prophetic Scriptures, according to the command of the eternal God to advance the obedience of faith among all nations — to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ — to Him be the glory forever! Amen.”
