#13 Samson: a type and shadow of someone to come.
“Now please be careful not to drink wine or beer, or to eat anything unclean; for indeed, you will conceive and give birth to a son. You must never cut his hair, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from birth, and he will begin to save Israel from the power of the Philistines.
So the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the Lord blessed him.”
Judges 13:4-5, 24 HCSB
Judge #13 Samson: a type and shadow of someone to come.
Samson’s birth is one of many that was proclaimed by an angel of God. He is the first of two that is recorded to be a Nazirite from birth. Have you figured out who the second is yet? John the Baptist! His birth was also proclaimed by an angel and he was a Nazrite from birth. They also share a similar death. Samson died to the Philistines when they cut off his hair and he took out the temple during a great feast. John died when Herod was having a great feast and his wife’s daughter asked for John’s head on a platter.
“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.”
“But when Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them and pleased Herod. So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. And prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter! ” Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.”
Matthew 14:6-9 HCSB
While John may not have been physically strong he had a strong spirit to stand up to Herod to tell him he should not be married to his brother’s wife. He also had to stand his ground to put up with the ridicule from the spiritual leaders who stood in opposition to him.
Who or what will you be strong for, Your family? Your friends? Your faith? We all will need to determine to resolve in our hearts who we will stand and fight for! There is coming a day, probably in my lifetime, when we as Christians will have to face death because we call on the name of Jesus! Are we ready for that day? If not what will it take to get us ready? Let us lay aside our wine and beer and get ready to be filled with the spirit of God!
“And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions, but be filled by the Spirit:”
“Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Suddenly a young lion came roaring at him, the Spirit of the Lord took control of him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.”
Judges 14:5-6 HCSB
“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.”
