Elon the Judge who made way for a future King!

“Elon, who was from Zebulun, judged Israel after Ibzan. He judged Israel 10 years, and when he died, he was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.”

‭‭Judges‬ ‭12‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Judge #12 Elon the Judge who made way for a future King!

We know so little and are not given any detail about the life of Elon. With the other judges at least they did something or had kids. All we know Elon judged from the land of Zebulun. He judged for ten years. He died.

Where is Zebulun?

“The third lot came up for Zebulun’s descendants by their clans. The territory of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid; their border went up westward to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the brook east of Jokneam. From Sarid, it turned east toward the sunrise along the border of Chisloth-tabor, went to Daberath, and went up to Japhia. From there, it went east toward the sunrise to Gath-Hepher and to Eth-Kazin; it extended to Rimmon, curving around to Neah. The border then circled around Neah on the north to Hannathon and ended at the Valley of Iphtah-el, along with Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem — 12 cities, with their villages. This was the inheritance of Zebulun’s descendants by their clans, these cities, with their villages.”

‭‭Joshua‬ ‭19‬:‭10‬-‭16‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

The most well-known name in the list is Bethlehem, but this is not Bethlehem of Judah that we recognize but this Bethlehem is north up by the sea of Galilee. Inside the territory is the town of Nazareth - to which one day Jesus would reside.

Who was Zebulun? He was the tenth son born to Jacob by Leah his first wife. His only younger siblings are Joseph and Benjamin. In Jacob’s last days in Egypt, he made a statement about all his kids. This was the statement for Zebulun: “Zebulun will live by the seashore and will be a harbor for ships, and his territory will be next to Sidon.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭49‬:‭13‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

So now Elon lived and judged from the same area where Jesus would live, grow up, and do most of His ministry. His work many many years before Jesus paved the way for Jesus. He may have been a nobody judging from a no-were town as it continued until the days of Jesus. Hear how Nathanael describes Nazerith.

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth? ” Nathanael asked him.

“Come and see,” Philip answered.”

‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭46‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

We may feel that way about our little towns, but you can be good coming out of your little town. Just as Elon came out of Aijalon in the land of Zebulun and Jesus out of Nazareth out of the land of Zebulun. So too we can be “you” out of your little town in the land of your state in your nation belonging to God!

“But He would not let him; instead, He told him, “Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you.”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

You go home and be the light the people in your city are looking for amid the darkness of the world around us!
