Peter and Andrew Jesus’ disciples!
Peter and Andrew
Peter was Jesus’ main disciple. If Jesus went somewhere unique he took 3 disciples and then focused on just one. The three were Peter, James, and John. But He would focus on Peter.
But first, let us look at his decision to follow Jesus. It all started back maybe a few months ago. Andrew had been picked by John to be his disciple.
“Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God! ” The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah! ” (which means “Anointed One”),”
John 1:35-37, 40-41 HCSB
It was Andrew who introduced his brother Peter to Jesus. Andrew had spent the day with Jesus and that evening when Andrew finally got home he had a story to tell of Jesus. But then they could not find Jesus and they went to work fishing. After 40+ days Jesus returns but today he is teaching the crowd by the Sea of Galilee. When he was pressed for space Jesus got into Peter’s boat.
“As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word, He was standing by Lake Gennesaret. He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then He sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat.”
We know the rest of the story. Jesus commanded Peter to go out into deep water and cast his net in the water. Peter does and has so many fish his net begins to break. Peter tells Jesus that He is too holy to be around Peter, but Jesus calls Peter to follow Him.
Who would not want to follow Jesus at that point? Peter heard what Andrew experienced with Jesus. Peter saw the provision of fish. And the teaching of Jesus.
“They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority.”
What about Jesus made you want to follow Him? Did you follow on someone else’s testimony? Did you experience some kind of miracle? Did you hear some kind of awesome teaching on Jesus? These will be the majority of reasons why someone will begin the follow Jesus! The Muslim converts to Christ often talk about a dream in which Jesus tells them that it is He whom they are looking for. But then they still need a teacher to inform them who Jesus is.
“But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who announce the gospel of good things!”
Romans 10:14-15 HCSB
Now will you be the person who will preach Jesus with your life and words so that others will positively experience Jesus?
