The scribes.
The scribes of Jesus’ day were not just a copier of Greek and Hebrew writings, but they were students of Moses’ law. These guys would pour over the books of The Old Testament to be a lawyer and judge in small simple cases. For them to say that God alone can forgive sins was a statement not out of ignorance but of research. They would not be saying that the priests could not forgive sins but they were saying that Jesus did not have the authority to forgive sins. At this point, they would be rejecting Jesus as a priest or Rabbi. That may even be demoting him back to a carpenter’s son. He was of the family line of David and would be in the line of a king and not from Aaron, the line of priests. They also would be rejecting Him as a prophet.
Do we discredit people because they don’t fit our normal bill of what a certain type of person might look or act like? The scribes discredited Jesus because He “blasphemed” claiming to do something He had no power to do. But he did!
A pastor told a story of when he was at a Christian music festival as a speaker. He saw a man who had a blue, foot-tall mohawk. He stopped to witness to him thinking for sure this guy does not know Christ. But come to find out he was the youth pastor and he did it to excite his teens to go to this music festival.
We all have pasts and they may have altered the way we look but that will never abandon the call of God on our lives. If I was tattooed covered with 12 different piercings, which I do not, would this discredit BQTT? We should not be making the same judgment as the scribes did of Jesus. But we should be studying the Bible for ourselves to see if what they are saying is true.
