Peter

Peter

Peter is probably one of the most known disciples of Jesus. We have learned through Mark that Peter was a fisherman (‭Mark‬ ‭1‬:‭16). He was married (Mark‬ ‭1‬:‭30). He was called to be Jesus’ apostle or disciple (Mark‬ ‭3‬:‭16‭). He was a personal witness of a young 12-year-old girl being raised back to life (Mark‬ ‭5‬:‭37)‬. And he was around for all the teaching and healings Jesus did. But Now we come to a point and Peter is learning about Jesus. Up until this point, he may well be thinking that Jesus is a good Rabbi, a wonderful teacher, or a great prophet. Jesus asked the disciples who do people say I am? To which they respond with what they are also thinking. Jesus asks again who do you say I am? Peter's response is you are the messiah. Not just a messiah but THE MESSIAH! Not just a person to kick the Romans out of Israel but the person to destroy the Devil’s occupation of all believers.

Jesus begins to tell them how he is to accomplish all this through His death and resurrection. But Peter cannot fathom how Jesus can conquer the adversary through His death. So he begins to rebuke Jesus. To which Jesus has to rebuke the Devil who is behind it all, Satan. So even though God was able to speak through Peter, Satan was also able to speak through Peter.

“He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s! ”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭8‬:‭32‬-‭33‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

And then six days later Jesus takes Peter along with James and John up the mountain, where Peter gets rebuked, this time by God.

“Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — because he did not know what he should say, since they were terrified.

A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭9‬:‭5‬-‭7‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

God had to correct Peter for thinking that Moses and Elisha needed a tabernacle to live in and be worshiped on that mountain. But only Jesus needed to be worshiped in their hearts by listening to Him.

Who do we tabernacle, dwell, with do we set up tents for people who are passing through? Do we spend too much time listening to the Devil and letting him use our mouths for purposes that are contrary to God’s plan and purpose for us? I know I am guilty of this as of late. Let us strive for God and Jesus to be the only voice we listen to!
