Some People, Kids, and His Disciples
There are three groups in today’s verse. Should we talk about the “Some People”, the “Children”, or “His disciples”? How about all three!
Some people were bringing their kids to Jesus. When I think of this I think of a presidential candidate while he is on his tour he is seen kissing babies. But these parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles are bringing their kids to Jesus not just for a political blessing but a blessing from God or a religious leader. Maybe they are asking that Jesus touch them so that they may have more blessings in their lives. Maybe they are asking Jesus to heal their babies from the major bumps and bruises that come with life.
The kids are passive in this touch with Jesus. They have no choice in the matter. Or maybe as they are getting older they have heard of this Jesus character and want to meet Him. A lot like the way kids will line up to see Santa at the mall. There was an intrinsic nature in the kids to trust Jesus. And in some cases in their parents.
But the disciples on the other hand were dissuading the “some people” from bringing their kids to Jesus. Jesus was not in favor of this but welcomed the kids with open arms. Possibly the disciples thought that Jesus did not have time for the kids, he was bigger than that. But Jesus always made time for people, especially the kids.
“When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you: Whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them.”
Mark 10:14-16 HCSB
Which will you be? Are you going to be the “some people” who will bring your kids to Jesus but will be unwilling to let yourself be brought to HIm? Will you be the “kids” who see the intrinsic value in Jesus for yourself? Or will you be like “His disciples” who will dissuade your kids and all kids from Jesus?
“Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit. Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whoever it falls, it will grind him to powder! ”
Matthew 21:42-44 HCSB
Jesus is the cornerstone of all of life. To fall on the cornerstone is to rely on Jesus to support your life, but to fall underneath Jesus is to also experience His judgment and be crushed under a millstone.
