Judas Iscariot AKA The Betrayer
Judas Iscariot AKA The Betrayer
Judas gets his spotlight here in the last days of Jesus’ ministry.
”Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to betray Him.
Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.” When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son. After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.” None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or that he should give something to the poor. After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.“
John 13:2, 26-30 HCSB
”While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi! ” — and kissed Him.“
Mark 14:43-45 HCSB
”Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What’s that to us? ” they said. “See to it yourself! ” So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.“
Matthew 27:3-5 HCSB
Judas exchanged his integrity for 30 pieces of silver. If Judas was paid in denarius it would amount to about $100. If he was paid in shekels it would be about $310. But in the end, it cost him those 30 silver coins and his life.
During Jesus’ prayer in John 17 he said, “While I was with them, I was protecting them by Your name that You have given Me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.“
What scripture was fulfilled with Judas? Here is what I have found!
”Even my friend in whom I trusted, one who ate my bread, has raised his heel against me.“
”Let his days be few; let another take over his position.“
Peter made this connection.
” For it is written in the Book of Psalms: Let his dwelling become desolate; let no one live in it; and Let someone else take his position.“
Zechariah played this out as a prophecy about Judas.
”Then I said to them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver. “Throw it to the potter,” the Lord said to me — this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter.“
Zechariah 11:12-13 HCSB
The cost of a dead slave was thirty shackles of silver.
”If the ox gores a male or female slave, he must give 30 shekels of silver to the slave’s master, and the ox must be stoned.“
Joseph’s brothers settled for less.
”When Midianite traders passed by, his brothers pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him for 20 pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took Joseph to Egypt.“
How much would we be willing to sell our savior for? Do we sell out for $100 of pleasure? $300? $1,000?
”So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death.“
So what fruit was produced then from the cost of pleasure you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death, just like in the life of Judas. Romans 6:21 BRT (Brian’s Rough Translation)
Let us turn away from those things that are bringing us toward death and let us turn toward Him who promises us Life!
”For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.“
